BECOME AN ASSISTANT IN ONE OF OUR HOMES
At the center of our community is the commitment that assistants and core members make to share their lives with each other as they live together. Some assistants come to L'Arche Association of Lethbridge for a few months in the summer, others come for a year or two, and a few have made a longer commitment to the community.
This invitation for core members and assistants to live together is at the heart of L'Arche Association of Lethbridge, and L'Arche around the world. Living together in a L'Arche Community, however, is more than sharing space and responsibilities as roommates. Rather, core members and assistants are invited to engage in real, appropriately intimate, and honest relationships in which the value and vocation of each person in the home is revealed to themselves, their companions, and the world around them. A L'Arche community is functioning as it should when, through the relationships between the individuals in the home, each person has a growing sense of their own worth, their own value, and the gifts and abilities they have to offer to their home, their work, and society at large.A typical day of an assistant involves getting up in the morning and providing whatever assistance core members need to get ready for work. Household chores, medical appointments, and various kinds of community meetings usually occupy the remainder of the morning. Assistants take a few hours of personal time in the afternoon. They are present again when core members return home from work between 3:30 and 5:00. The remainder of the day is spent doing what most "families" do: cooking supper, playing games, going shopping, watching T.V., going out to participate in various activities, etc.
Each live-in assistant has one and one-half days away per week, and one three and one-half day weekend away per month. Holiday time is available to those who make a commitment beyond a three-month probationary period. A first year assistant receives a stipend of $650.00 per month for personal expenses in addition to room and board.
